A registered patent attorney, Jim provides thoughtful and strategic guidance to clients throughout the process of identifying, acquiring, licensing and protecting their intellectual property assets. He possesses a deep knowledge of patent, copyright and trade secrets laws, assisting his business clients in making sure that new technologies are sufficiently documented and protected. Jim handles patent prosecution, infringement studies, patentability opinions, freedom-to-practice studies and design-around analyses for clients across a range of industries, including software, semiconductors, power generation and delivery equipment, robotics, wireless communication technologies, composite materials, printing and packaging systems, synthetic diamonds, medical devices, video display devices, computer security and encryption systems, innovative environmental technologies, financial transaction processing, e-commerce, auto parts, food service equipment, electronic games and synthetic coatings.
Jim regularly performs IP audits and due diligence in an effort to help venture capital firms, private equity funds and IP holding companies understand the value of their patents, as well as the existing obstacles to market entry and opportunities to expand their intellectual property rights. Jim is also heavily involved in the negotiation of complex technology transfer and license agreements, including software licenses, supply chain agreements, exclusive patent licenses and marketing relationships
Additionally, Jim provides counsel to consumer product manufacturers, restaurants, professional sports teams, sporting goods companies, business consultants, service providers and others on matters including trademark protection, registration, use and infringement. Jim also has experience negotiating television, radio, website, sponsorship, advertising, and media contracts for professional sports franchises, advertisers and other individuals in the public eye.

Jim’s prior work as an electrical engineer provides him with intimate knowledge in the realm of power systems design and maintenance. He has also managed construction projects in the oil pipeline and electric utility industries. Jim previously worked as a law clerk in the intellectual property departments of a
Fortune 500 company and with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
